Illustration Friday, Sacrifice

Sacrifice! We talk about it, walk around it, and pontificate on it.

My first thoughts gravitated to the Cross of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death for us. Yet being the artist who fancies himself the creative type I thought an illustration of the cross would be overused.

I decided to fall back to my old stand-by--and that's the typographic treatment of a subject. Sacrifice is the death of one for the benefit of those left behind. The hero is one who willingly becomes the sacrifice for others. That would disqualify most of us who are still breathing from the ranks of the most heroic.

You can get this mini-poster at Foto Bella. Illustration by Robert McLaughlin.

Food for thought.

This illo is so true and perfect for the theme Robert. Most of us have it made in the shade and our sacrifices have been relatively minor compared to the way some people sacrifice on a daily basis in other countries and in very poor areas of our own country not to mention all the sacrifices of the heroes...

nice thought, and like u i thought the cross would be over used and thus decided to take a lite approch to a subject which carries a lot heaviness for us all or at least should.

ValGal--I guess there are two types of sacrifices. One with a BIG S and one with a little s. I, like most of us, am afraid of the BIG S. But I've got enough sense to recognize true heroism, and that in today's world we often don't really know what the word means.

Michael--I wish I could preach the gospel and influence everyone that hears me. Obviously, that isn't going to happen. So, for now, I'll settle on a "secular" gospel, and try to influence others in correct thinking, and leave the spiritual stuff up to God.

Kaya and Hotwire--Thanks much!

Very true, and a lot to think about.

Hey Dad,
The graphics are very understated compared to the weight of the message. I love it! The graphics facilitate you're focus being drawn to the message rather than distracted by the graphic. So powerful! And I love the point that you make in your text of most of us OBVIOUSLY not being the heroic by virtue of still being alive. How very fortunate are we to have those heroes.
