The Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress will host the 11th annual meeting of the International Cartoon Arts Festival (ICAF) from Thursday, Oct. 12, to Saturday, Oct. 14, in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is made possible by the support from the Caroline and Erwin Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon.
The three-day festival will feature talks by Jules Feiffer and other outstanding creators of comic art as well as academic presentations by comic art scholars from around the world. In addition, the first day of this year’s conference includes presentations and displays by Library staff:
* Georgia Higley, head of the Newspaper Section in the Serial and Government Publications Division, will give a presentation entitled, "Researching Comic Books in the Library of Congress," at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12. Selected comic books from the division’s collections will be displayed.
* A display of drawings and manuscript materials by Jules Feiffer, selected from the Library’s outstanding holdings of his work, will be on view in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, in Room 339 from 3:00-3:45 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12. The display will be curated by Sara W. Duke and Martha H. Kennedy.
* From 4:00-5:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, a tour of the exhibition “Enduring Outrage: Editorial Cartoons by Herb Block” will follow, conducted by co-curators Duke and Kennedy in the Southwest Gallery on the second floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building.
Programming also includes a special session on superhero comics by acclaimed artist Phil Jiminez and writer and editor Denny O’Neil, and another panel on the process of producing and publishing a comic book by writer Stuart Moore and artist Jamal Igle. In addition, Rwandan comics artist Rupert Bazambanza and American lawyer and conflict mediation expert Ellen Yamshon will speak about the Rwandan genocide and comics, at 7:30 pm, Friday, October 13, 2006, at George Washington University’s Gelman Library.
