Operation Photo Rescue

Using Mac computers, photojournalist Rebecca Sell and photo editor Dave Ellis from the Free Lance-Star daily newspaper in Fredericksburg, VA, spent a week in Pass Christian, MS, helping victims of Hurricane Katrina to restore photos that were damaged by the storm. Learn more about Operation Photo Rescue on the volunteers’ photo blog created using iWeb. [Feb 17, 2006]

So if you wish to volunteer, please do so at OPRvolunteer@gmail.com

Every potential volunteer needs to be aware that we have already distributed to our current network of volunteers every damaged photo that we took in while down in the Pass. That means we don’t have anymore photos to hand out at this time. However, please don’t hesitate to volunteer. We will add you to our volunteer contact list. We have plans for return trips to the area and we will gather more photos for restoration to distribute to our growing network.

Remember, we have barely scratched the surface of this effort. Hurricane Katrina has left hundreds of thousands in her wake. Surely, the majority of them have photos that need to be saved. OPR’s mission is to restore as many damaged photo that we can get our hands on.

Also, most volunteers are offering restoration help. That’s great, but we could also use volunteers to handle the photographic copywork of the damaged images. If you have the necessary digital equipment, the right skills and the ability to travel to some part of the Gulfcoast region, we can most definitely use your help. Please volunteer at: OPRvolunteer@gmail.com.

Thanks everyone. Becky and I our floored that our little idea has become epic in scale.
