Both these are great! What software are you using? I just had the honor of meeting Twisselman. He was coming this way and we met at a coffeeshop. That was fun to do.
Scott I've been switch hitting between DAZ Studio and Poser for the 3D work. DAZ is the greatest free 3D software on the planet! I love it! Poser is $250, I love it also--I just love free more.
Layering of the background and foreground was done in Photoshop.
I think the second image is better because of the shadows underneath the turtle. Because he is so evenly lit, the top picture looks likes he's disconnected from the background.

I have client (lynda.com) and I edit training movies for her. I just finished editing the new movies for 3dsmax, but I see that it is VERY expensive software...but it got me thinking.
